Business of the Arts
- For-profit and non-profit business aspects of theatre, music, dance, and fine arts needed to pursue a career in the arts.
- Marketing, promotion, retailing, financing, intellectual property law, entrepreneurship, basic business models, possibility thinking, future directions.
- Potential semester projects: PowerPoint presentations, legal case studies, Webcasting, marketing plan, sole-proprietor business plan.
- Guest speakers from the industry and possible field trips to arts organizations and venues.
Pop (All Styles) and Musical Theatre Voice
- Class instruction in vocal techniques and performance
- Learn how to belt without hurting your voice.
- Tailored to individual student abilities and interests—all genres of music—pop, rock, classical, country, musical theatre
- Basic physiology of the larynx, breath control, muscle coordination, articulation, relaxation, performance anxiety.
- Semester projects, determined by each class, may include music theater scenes,night club acts with a band,opera scenes.
- Learn studio, nightclub, band, and musical theatre audition techniques.
- Previous instruction not required.
String Techniques
- Class instruction in string instrument practice and performance.
- Basic music reading and instrumental techniques.
- Students may choose guitar, violin, viola, cello, or string bass.
- Grades determined by written work and performances.
- Repertoire will consist of variety of musical genres, including but not limited to classical, rock, country.
- Previous instruction not required.
Music in Film and Video
- Introduction to the relationship between music and film or video.
- Screenplays, storyboarding, instrumentation, film scoring, canned tracks, special effects, film analysis, acting, dance, business aspects, video games, production and post production.
- Potential projects tailored to individual students or student groups: create and score a video, create business plan for a movie or video, analyze your favorite movie, score a pre-existing video or movie using canned tracks.
- Guest speakers from the industry and possible field trips to recording/video and post-production studios.
- No prior theatre, music or film experience necessary.
Internships and Externships
- Develop your job skills in fine arts, music, dance, and theatre.
- Time management, organizational skills, self-assessment, interpersonal communication skills
- Conflict resolution, ethics, interview techniques, résumé creation, self-promotion materials
- Understanding personal vs. professional issues in the marketplace.
- Weekly classroom seminar.

Music in Film and Video will show you how it’s done, and give you hands-on technical skill, creating sounds and synchronizing music to film, digital video, and video games.

Any or all of these courses will make you more aware of your own interests, strengths, and weaknesses. And we can help you choose a college and chart a course for success, whether or not you become an arts major.
I am a classically trained singer, but I would like to perform a wider variety of musical genres. Can the voice class help me?
Yes! The tools of good singing cross all musical genres. Voice class will teach you healthy singing in any style.
I have no voice training and cannot read music. Can I still participate in voice class?
Regardless of your background, voice class will help. A combination of individual attention and group instruction will be tailored to your needs.
